Cherish Your Hobbies:

I understand your time is limited and precious! But I want to encourage you to talk with your spouse to set aside some time to engage in activities that bring you joy and refreshment. This doesn’t have to be complicated, even 15 minutes can make a huge difference. Maybe a relaxing bath, time to read, pray, listen to music, or draw. These moments of soulful rejuvenation help fill you up and allow you to step more fully into your God-given roles – including your new role as mom!

Try to sleep while your baby is asleep:

I know. You’ve probably heard this 20 times by now, but it really is important for you to rest while your baby is. After all, the time will come so quickly when they don’t sleep as much. Plan your bedtime routines around the same time each night, as good quality sleep is healthy for new mothers and their kids.

Look for support:

It’s so hard for new moms to manage their workload alone. Be intentional to seek out a network of trusted people to help you make self-care a priority. Finding a support system will benefit both you and your baby. Your spouse, friends, family members, and even a nanny can help you with child care. Your church community or a teen as a “mother’s helper” could be another great resource for setting up the help you need. Building connections is also helpful in the case of an emergency as it will make it easier to get help when you need it most!

Try to stay positive:

Managing your mood is important as you navigate self-care in your motherhood journey. Give yourself plenty of grace along the way. You’ve spent most of your life focusing on your own needs. So when the baby arrives, it will take time to adjust. Try not to be too hard on yourself. Trust in the Lord’s provision and guidance as you navigate the new challenges of motherhood.

Quality Time with Your Husband:

Since new moms’ lives are hectic, losing focus on your marriage is easy. Building a healthy relationship with your husband takes time, commitment, and intention. Resentment can occur when you break communication ties and don’t value each other’s unique strengths. One way to boost motherhood self-care routines is to pursue quality time with your husband. Find a couple-oriented activity that you can undertake together to celebrate your shared values. For instance, if you both love cooking, you can prepare dinner together once weekly. Read the Bible and pray together. Watch a movie or a show you both enjoy. You can also plan some screen-free time to talk through your couple’s goals.

Conquer Mom Chaos:

Feelings of exhaustion and chaos can be overwhelming, especially when multitasking for extended periods. Instead, try to focus on one task at a time and find ways to alleviate the stress. For example, you may avoid cooking a gourmet meal and order some fast food or postpone washing the dishes until you get enough rest. God’s peace amidst the chaos can help provide solace and help lead you to avoid additional busyness.

Regular Doctor Visits:

New and expectant mothers 3 months pregnant and above should visit their doctor or midwife regularly for checkups. Routine screening can provide useful insight into the mother’s and baby’s health. If you struggle with constant mood swings, your doctor can recommend ways to help manage your emotions before they spiral out of control. You can also quickly detect any abnormalities that could affect you and your baby.

Nutrition Matters:

Your body requires good nutrition to keep you and the baby healthy. New moms may struggle to get time to cook but just know your time available to dedicate to dinner prep will eventually increase. If you are in your last trimester of pregnancy, start cooking in advance. Meals in the freezer will save your life. Consider delegating the cooking to your partner when possible, and plan how you can have nutritious dinners on the table without any hassle. Fruits and green smoothies, vegetable-packed omelets, and noodles are great options for mothers lacking time for cooking. Limit your sugar intake and opt for protein-rich foods that satisfy your hunger. Ordering groceries online will do you a big favor, I’ve done this for years! Do this as much as possible to cut down your weekly workload.

remain Hydrated:

It helps to always carry your water bottle along with you. Dehydration can cause headaches and reduce breast milk production. As a tip, drink at least 8 glasses of water daily or even more when exercising or breastfeeding. Hydrating before and after feeding your baby is a great idea since breast milk is about 90% water. Effective hydration is particularly important for breastfeeding moms. Water can improve your skin health and protect your joints even if you are not a nursing mother, so keep this in mind!

Connect with other Moms:

Sharing your experience with other moms facing similar challenges can be incredibly comforting. You may want to join a mom’s online group or attend pregnancy support events to connect with fellow new mothers. You will feel better knowing you are not alone in your struggles. There is a lot of help out there. Even visiting a breastfeeding workshop, for instance, can help you learn new tips and make connections to help guide you on the way.

Be there for your baby

Being there for your baby also counts in your wellness. Try to savor every little moment with your child and enjoy the cuddles and snuggles. When they stare at you with those curious eyes, smile back and thank God for your new blessing! Capturing photos and videos of the special moments will leave lasting memories for the future. Relax and de-stress your system, and avoid worrying about your inability to complete everything perfectly. Whether cuddling on the couch together or singing to them, being present for your baby can take away the worries of a new mom.

Explore the outside world with your baby

Getting outdoors with your child can enhance your mood and energy. A brisk walk outside can transform your day. Of course, you must listen to your body and ensure you don’t overwhelm yourself before or after childbirth. When exploring the outdoors, your baby can join you for the adventure once you keep them in their stroller or baby carrier. This will give you fresh air, and your baby will also benefit from the new experience of being in the real world.

Make peace with your body

Understand that every mom’s postpartum body transformation is different. Rather than comparing your shape to others, you should embrace your body and take good care of yourself. Appreciate the amazing feat you accomplished and remind yourself about the resilience it takes to come this far. Mingle with positive people for encouragement and shun critics. Avoid having unrealistic expectations and make peace with your body as you go through postpartum changes. A new hairdo and a great skincare routine can also help you appreciate yourself more, so keep this in mind. You can even increase your self-confidence by getting new clothing, shoes, accessories, and so on. This leads to the next point.

Dress your best

Looking great is part of being a good mom, so dress your best. Maybe you won’t want to keep rocking maternity clothes or stretch pants if you haven’t shed the baby weight—shop for affordable clothes, including jeans and shirts, to match your current size. Up to 80% of new moms wear the wrong bra size. That means getting your measurement right is important. Pregnancy causes significant hormonal changes in your body, which you may not realize. A great bra will complement your dress.

Prioritizing self-care as a new mom is not only crucial but also in alignment with biblical principles. While the demands of motherhood can be overwhelming, neglecting self-care can lead to exhaustion and stress, affecting your physical and spiritual well-being. These 14 essential self-care tips are designed to nurture your overall well-being—body, mind, and spirit. Embrace these practices to navigate the beautiful journey of motherhood with faith and self-care, cherishing both your God-given role as a mom and your unique identity.
