You’ve heard of the six degrees of separation idea, right? Six degrees of separation is the idea that all people are six, or fewer, social connections away from each other (according to wikipedia). I don’t know how true that is in my circles, but I’m always amazed to see how interconnected people are!
This “rule” is just one of the reasons I’m guessing you’ve heard a lot of hype about essential oils! You probably know someone or “know someone who knows someone” who uses them. There’s a lot of information floating around out there, so much it’s hard to know what to do with it!
So how do you sort through all of the information? If the bits and pieces have left you curious, I’m so glad you’re here. I want to help you understand the why and how behind the essential oils and what you really need to know amidst all the “pretty packaging”. So let’s dig in!
Why and How to Use Essential Oils: What You Need to Know!
Although essential oils have become increasingly popular in recent years, they’ve been around for much longer than that! Dating back to Bible times, essential oils and their many uses are nothing new. People have used them for thousands of years to promote healing and wellness.
Essential oils have a very wide range of uses. The three main uses are:
- Aromatic – Inhale the aroma from the diffuser or the bottle.
- Topical – Apply directly to the skin or using a carrier oil.
- Internal – Place 1-2 drops in a liquid or capsule and take internally. *Young Living’s Vitality line is the same high-quality oil but labeled for internal use*
Essential oils are used for aromatherapy, home cleaning, personal care, cooking, beauty care and support for your entire body!
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are a highly concentrated natural oil produced from plant material by steam distillation, resin distillation, extraction or cold pressing. Essential oils are extracted from botanicals such as flowers, shrubs, roots, seeds, and trees. Extracting essential oils is a very carefully handled process. They evaporate quickly but these processes allow the natural smell and therapeutic constituents of the oil to remain intact.
Because of this, there are often one or more oils that can help support the different body systems and mood. There has been much evidence of the benefits of using essential oils and they show to be an effective way to help support your health and wellness.
How Do You Apply Essential Oils?
Essential oils are administered in three different ways. First, a person can inhale them aromatically. This can be done by using a diffuser and putting several drops of the particular essential oil (or oil blend) into the water, or just inhaling the oil directly from the bottle.
The second way is to apply them topically. There are some essential oils that can be applied directly to the skin. If you are unsure it is best to first put a few drops into a carrier oil before applying. This can be anything from olive oil to coconut oil, as well as any other natural, pure carrier oil you have around the house.
The third way to use oils is by ingesting them. Not all oils can be ingested, and one must be careful to take them in a way that is safe. Young Living’s Vitality line is the same high-quality oil but labeled for safe internal use.
