I’ll be honest.
I spent a LOT of time not seeking God’s will for my life. I didn’t become a Christian until my 20’s. Then, after becoming a believer, I found myself frozen in fear of making the wrong choice. I wanted to know His will regarding my decisions so badly that I was afraid to make ANY choice at all. I needed help to understand God’s will for my life and I wasn’t sure where to turn except for His word. Which was the right choice by the way 🙂
Maybe today you find yourself in a similar spot? Or, possibly you’re searching the internet for Bible verses that will help you make a decision. Either way, I hope these 10 Bible verses encourage you and bring you back to His ultimate purpose for you and each of us – to become more like Him.
How do I know God’s will for my life?
There are some areas where scripture is very clear on what God’s will is. How to handle our words, the foolishness of the world, how we are to treat others and more. But there are plenty of other areas where He doesn’t specifically write out answers to our big questions. For instance, where should we live? Should we take the job offer? Is buying that house a good idea?
With these types of “Amoral” decisions, how can we be sure we are hearing clearly from our Father who created us and has good plans for us?
I believe there are two keys to keep in mind as we attempt to discern God’s will for our lives.
- God cares the most about our hearts and relationship with Him. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”
- His ultimate purpose for us is to become more Christ-like. When we reflect the image of our Father, we shine Him to others and He is glorified. This shift in thinking is crucial to experiencing God’s peace in times where you aren’t seeing a clear cut answer to His will in a situation.
So friend, let’s step back. Take a breath, and take our eyes off of ourselves for a moment.
Let’s look at 7 things the Lord says is His will with 10 verses to back it up! Remember your growth in Christ-likeness is key. God’s will is someone we should BE not necessarily something we should DO.
10 Bible Verses to Help You Know God’s Will for Your Life
God wants you to be saved
He tells us in 1 Timothy 2:1-4:
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
and in 2 Peter 3:9
“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
He wANTS us to Pray unceasingly and give thanks
1 Thessalonians 5:11-18 reminds us “Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing. But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction, and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another.
We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
God wills us to be set apart, to Abstain from Immorality
Paul is explaining that God wants us, as believers, to be holy as He is holy and to be set apart.
1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 says “Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.”.
His will is for us to be wise
Ephesians 5:15-17 “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”
God’s will is for us to Submit to Authority
1 Peter 2:13-15 reminds us that we are to submit to the Lord and others He places in authority knowing that the Lord is sovereign over all. “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.”
God’s will is for us to bear fruit
Colossians 1:9-12 “And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.”
he wants us to be obedient
Ephesians 6:5-8 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free.
LAst, there are two very important bible verses to note. I pray that you use these last two verses to encourage your heart as you press on to do His will until THE END!
Hebrews 10:35-39 “Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For, Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him. But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.”
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life – is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
We need to focus on what God says His will is for us through prayer, reading scripture and growing in Christ-likeness. Then we will be encouraged to make the best decision possible given our knowledge. We can rest in the peace that comes only from walking in His presence.
